Upcoming Webinar: Diagnostics and Troubleshooting

Upcoming Webinar: Network Diagnostics and PROFINET

PI North America and the PIC (PROFI Interface Center) will be hosting an hour-long webinar next month. The webinar will cover diagnostics and troubleshooting on a PROFINET network. Some special topics to be covered include cable testers, network test tools, network scanners, server diagnostic monitoring, etc.

Preventing Downtime

Ethernet-based systems can provide diagnostics on the Transport oriented layers as well as Application based diagnostics. Transport Oriented Layers Diagnostics provides information about TCP, UDP, IP, Ethernet (link down, bandwidth, statistics, connections, etc.) Application Layer Diagnostics for PROFINET provides device-specific diagnostics: module unplugged, wire break, IO status, Data records, etc.

PROFINET has the best in class diagnostic mechanisms, being built on standard IEEE 802.3 Ethernet allowing the use of Information Technology (IT) protocols such as Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP), and Hypertext Transport Protocol (HTTP) as part of its communication architecture. These protocols can display alarms and conditions in an HMI.

  • SNMP: Standard tools for reading statistics and diagnostics
  • LLDP: Mapping the network topology and simple device replacement
  • HTTP: Web access to devices for configuration/diagnostics

Comprehensive diagnostic information is available for PROFINET. Alarms, HMI screens, special-purpose tools, and standard IT protocols all have a place in preventing downtime and assisting with troubleshooting. To prevent downtime, choose redundant networks, devices, and controllers.
