Security is no longer just an afterthought in industrial communications—it’s now an essential part of every network. PROFINET Security plays a central role in this shift and continues to shape how secure industrial networks are built and operated.
Plugfests
In 2024, PI hosted two Plugfests dedicated to advancing security: one at the Smart Factory OWL in June and another at OTH-Amberg in December. Plugfests are collaborative testing events where manufacturers, developers, and experts come together to check interoperability, test new implementations, and ensure that devices comply with PROFINET standards. Both 2024 events provided valuable opportunities to test implementations, especially for PROFINET Security Classes 2 and 3, and to exchange practical experience among participants.
Looking Ahead
The next step is already planned. At the end of September and beginning of October 2025, another Plugfest will take place. This event will focus on specific security functions, such as secure AR (Application Relation) establishment, and once again offer a setting for hands-on testing and collaboration on PROFINET Security. Manufacturers and developers will have the chance to validate solutions, ensure interoperability, and refine their products to meet the latest security requirements.
A Continuous Commitment
These Plugfests are more than isolated events—they are part of PI’s ongoing effort to strengthen PROFINET Security. Each meeting brings the community closer to robust, future-proof networks that can stand up to evolving challenges. By working together, we’re not only responding to today’s security demands but also laying the foundation for tomorrow’s secure industrial communication.
