Functional safety is not only in the interest of the affected persons, but it also makes sense from a business point of view. When the risk of accidents is correctly accounted for, systems equipped with modern safety technology have a much lower total cost of ownership than unprotected ones.
Once proven, many of the mechanisms employed by PROFINET IRT for 15+ years, are now being standardized by the IEEE e.g. in TSN. In hindsight, we are seeing just how truly 'ahead of its time' PROFINET technology is/was.
When the Industry 4.0 Project was started at PI with lots of dedicated companies, its many different dimensions quickly became clear.
