The specification and certification of PROFINET over APL, based on the IEEE standard 10BASE-T1L, has now been completed for devices. Supplements for certification of the APL-Switches are currently in progress. Similar device classes but also new devices can be used for non-ex applications, too. For this purpose, the SPE technology, which is also the basis for APL, is available. The work in this working group “Integration of SPE in PROFINET” must be closely coordinated with the joint working group “Independent Protocol Physical Layer Group (10Base-T1L)“. The leaders of both working groups are therefore the same.

Problem

To implement a robust, reliable, and interoperable SPE solution based on PROFINET, a clear and complete description is required. The objective of the working group is to recognize gaps in the specification and develop solutions to close these gaps. In particular, the definitions for PHYs and corresponding power classes and the interaction with Power-over-Dataline (PoDL) are to be clarified.

The participation in the working group “Integration of SPE in PROFINET” is only intended for members of the PI-Organization. Within this working group all protocol-specific topics of PROFINET will be processed, so that an interoperable integration and a PROFINET certification of SPE switches, sensors and devices is possible.

Order

After analyzing the existing specifications, a solution concept and subsequent elaboration for the requirements on PHYs and power classes is required Mr. Volker Goller from Analog Devices has been appointed as head of the technical working group “AdHoc/PG10 Integration of SPE in PROFINET” and has accepted this appointment. Mr. Harald Müller has agreed to act as deputy.

Result

The work result will entail extensions of PROFINET standards and guidelines and will also be included in the IEC specifications.

Cooperation

These tasks are carried out under the responsibility of the working group “AdHoc/PG10 Integration of SPE in PROFINET”. Specialists from system, infrastructure and device manufacturers who would like to work productively on the topic “Integration of SPE in PROFINET” are being sought for this working group. Knowledge in the areas of PROFINET and its specifications, the design of PROFINET networks, APL, and PoDL is highly welcome.

The virtual Kick-off meeting “Integration of SPE in PROFINET” is planned for April 30th, 2024, 15:30-17:00 CET.

All interested member companies are invited to collaborate on this topic.

Please send your registration until April 19th,2024 to info[AT]profibus.com or to the working group leader volker.goller[AT]analog.com directly.
